Police say retailers need to be proactive against thieves who often use crowded stores as a cover.
A veteran Victoria retailer says shoplifting is the only thing that would make her want to quit the business.
Gayle Robinson says theft is part of being in retail which is why she hires undercover security to patrol her store.
Saanich Police Sgt. Julie Fast warns businesses without store security not to try to apprehend shoplifters.
She says there have been many cases involving shoplifters who have assaulted store staff.
Sgt. Fast also says many thefts go undetected and are not reported.
