Caught on dashcam

I am talking my my 3yo who's in the back seat and had just said "it sounds like rain" so I was explaining that driving through slush sound like rain. He's the one who says "What?" after I stop.

When I said "I'm gonna have to..." I was thinking about the last time I was in an accident where I swerved to avoid a car that cut me off and wound up hitting someone else. I was blamed in the accident because, as I was told be a police officer, "You shouldn't have swerved - you should have just hit the car that cut you off". :-/ This was going through my mind and I was thinking "I'm going to have to hit him". What I mean was I believed that if I swerved into the ditch then my car would be wrecked and I'd be blamed for it again.

Thanks to ABS (the grinding sound you can hear as I'm braking) I was able to get past him without leaving the roadway, so there was no contact between my car and the BMW. I was only doing about 20mph but the snow was still fresh and there was very little traction - so it took a long time to stop even with ABS assistance. The video shows that I simply had no time to stop even though my braking reaction time was very quick. Car is a 2005 Subaru Legacy.

  • you do realize that one you release the gas and depress the brakes AWD is meaningless right ? ALL CARS have 4 BRAKES. so NO CAR has a distinct advantage over others cars because of 4wd or awd when stopping in fact the AWD is likely to be HEAVIER and at a DISADVANTAGE when stopping.

AWD means GO faster not STOP faster.

Good job keeping it cool and working the problem. for a moment I thought you were going into that side ditch.

  • @NedPeppers There *is* an accident... The BMW rear-ended the minivan, which is what shunted it over itno my lane. I didn't say that *I* was involved in the accident. :-)

  • glad you and your kid werent hurt. good driving. although pay attention to cars behind you when you do decide to make a complete and sudden stop in conditions like that. you never know if someone isnt paying enough attention

  • @whymeandnothim It has FOUR!!! 4!!! Two (2) disk brakes at the front and two (2) drums at the rear!!

  • @patwill0007 he has money not brains.. cant drive without them

  • @nerys71 mine has 2 brakes... 2006 vw polo!!

  • why that happen to a bmw :( poor car

  • WHEN PLAYING THE VIDEO KEEP PRESSING 2 ...YOU CAN ALL CLEARLY SEE THE CAR REAR ENDING THE VEHICLE IN FRONT .... thankfully you are a good driver

  • @nerys71 you do realize that traction control systems don't necessarily only use brakes right? The computer of the car reads what each wheel speed sensor is doing and accelerates or decelerates each wheel appropriately.

AWD means the computer has more to work with to keep your steering input in control, rather than only working with 2 wheels.

x2 with keeping your cool Scruit. Good save.

  • @bloodhoun234 Those cars have line locks in the front brakes that allow the front brakes to be locked while leaving the rear brakes free. They still have 4 brakes for normal driving. Wiki: "burnout" and read the section "practice"

  • @Scruit every single street legal drag racing car has it on the front 2 wheels so they can do a rear wheel burnout

  • @bloodhoun234 ALL legal road cars have brakes on all wheels. Name one street-legal car that does not.
