The speaker would run the risk of incurring the monarchs wrath should the news they delivered be found unsatisfactory, so speakers in the past would take the chair almost unwillingly.
We have it in the UK as well. For some reason it's "custom" for the speaker to be dragged unwillingly to his position. I think it's to demonstrate that he's meant to be humble, fair and above party politics.
