Everyone has their own interpretation of art. The artist here decided the song spoke to her in a specific way, so explored that. The lyrics don't mean the same thing to her that they did to Elliott Smith, no doubt, but again, this is always the case with art. Not everyone need like it, but it's certainly not sacrilege to reinterpret a classic work. Thanks for watching.

No one is disrespecting Elliott Smith here, and certainly no one is plagiarizing, as we have clearly credited him where appropriate. Many artists make alterations to songs. The musical arrangement itself is an alteration. Should all covers be discounted because they do not reproduce the exact same chord voicings or instrumentation? Of course not. Yes, typically lyrics are not changed when someone does a cover, but that does not mean there is something inherently wrong with doing so.

It would be considered an abomination to rework the lyrics on a cover of a song by The Beatles or a poem by Frost, and I cannot think of a reason to give any less respect to a less mainstream artist. Once you have significantly changed the lyrics it is no longer Between the Bars but instead a completely different song of which ~90% is plagiarized from Smith’s original.

Keep in mind that without permission from the copyright owner you can be sued for modifying a song or even uploading a recorded cover. After all, Youtube is a profit generating website and in this case none of the profits are going to the owner of the copyright, are they? Legal issues aside, an overwhelming majority of artists will agree that song lyrics should not be open source to modify at one’s discretion without permission any more than poems and short stories.

I noticed if people ever do covers of Elliott smith, it's either between the bars, miss misery or angeles, not much else.
