Why are the strings on the opposite sides? Aren't the cellos usually on a conductor's right?

It depends on the conductor's preference - for some repertoire, conductors like to rearrange the strings, for example put 2nd violins opposite 1sts if there's a lot of antiphonal writing (e.g. call and response) so the audience can hear that better. It's often thought of as a 'German' layout, used for German repertoire, or by German orchestras.

Mahler was Jewish, his music was banned by the Nazis

The orchestrated turbulence of air rejoices with Mahler. Yes. It's a cloudy day. Thank God for clouds! Clouds bring rain. Rain is good.

Why do most conductors, including Gergiev here, take too quick a tempo. Here it is almost comic the way it rushes ahead. Miscalculation. The movement loses all the terrifying relentlessness of a true military march, the basis for this movement.
