We recently built our home and had it prewired for surround sound in the family room. The builders put junction boxes on the studs where the speakers would go. We had trouble finding any details on how we could install the speakers on our own with these junction boxes being on the stud and not have to cut into the ceiling joist/stud. We definitely did not want to leave the plate cover on the ceiling and put the speakers somewhere else on the ceiling!

So we decided since we were able to do it ourselves then we would make this video to help anyone looking to do this on their own. It saved us plenty of money and is not hard to do.

If you are a little hesitant to cut into your ceiling or wall then stop by your local hardware store such as Home Depot or Lowe's and then get a 4x4 or small scrap piece of sheetrock and practice on it first.

We got our speakers from Monoprice.com.

  • Hey what kind of speakers are they

  • @roccoaj3 Monoprice in-ceiling speakers, rear speakers are 6", front speakers are 8" angled

  • Something else you should do is test the speaker before you mounted it...could have bad wire, bad speaker, bad connection....do it enough times and testing it becomes instinct when you lose money on your own time and have to undo and troubleshoot for missing a simple but very important step...a few ways to test without having actual audio. Good speaking!

  • @senextx We tested battery tested the speakers before installation, just did not include that in the installation video. Thanks!

  • Good video. Nice and easy to understand, and the fact that you made a little mistake by drawing your template over the joist shows you're still learning too, but the video showed how easy it is even if you're not exactly sure what your doing.

  • @rockinar We had to put the speaker where it was because the prewired junction box and cover plate was installed on a joist so we did that to cover up the hole. Thanks!

  • great tip "start small then make it bigger as you go" I had to find that the hard way.

  • Yeah, I followed the steps and had relatively no problems getting my speakers installed. I have done some work like this in the past but had never installed speakers.

  • Thanks for your fine video. It saves me headache and money!!!

  • I have the same speakers but they are slightly bigger.

  • 3) If possible, probe in the ceiling before you cut. You can do this through the junction box. Not sure if there is a better way, but I used a wire hanger and an iPhone. If there is not insulation, you can stick an iPhone into the junction box and take pictures or a video of what is inside the ceiling. I did this after the first one and it worked perfect every time. I found another water pipe in a picture I took with my iPhone probing and was able to plan around it.

  • awesome dude! good work
