No, they were Christians who wanted to keep seperate from society and the government. Basically they were harmless people who minded their own business, farmed their land and raised families. They never bothered anyone, they kept to themselves, and didn't start trouble. The government wanted to make an example out of them, to show the whole country that no one is beyond the government's control.
