  • When a calf or foal (horse) is born its covered in wet fluid from the womb, the mother licks and cleans the newborn for weeks until it is completely dry, during this time it is trying to learn to walk properly, feed properly and learn the routine of the herd. Cowboys would view this similiarity to new hired hands trying to learn their jobs or inexperienced horsemen and cowboys calling them "wet behind the ears" implying they were young and inexperienced unlike the old hands. Happy Trails.
