I think we can all agree on one thing about wars, they kill a lot of people and leave behind a lot of destruction. Those unfortunate to be caught in the cross hairs of political divides are the ones who often suffer the most, and for many soldiers the biggest battles they fight are when they return home.

This song is dedicated to all those affected by war directly or indirectly, and may one day we truly find a better way to resolve our differences, imagine a world like that.

I'd like to extend a very special thanks to Rick and his wife Alice for their outstanding contributions to this video. Your musical productions for this Rick was outstanding to say the least and Alice you did an exceptional job on the video, Noy and I are truly grateful to both of you for sharing our stories with us. Mark and Noy

I encourage everyone to visit Ricks channel, it's filled with great music and good vibrations.

This is My Rifle
words and music by Mark Maysey

(verse)
back in sixty nine
I didn't have a care
before they called my number
I chopped off all my hair
said goodbye to Mama
dad and uncle Dan
boarded an airplane
and headed off for Nam

(verse)
he called us to attention
as we stepped off the plane
checked us off a list
as he called out our names
then he picked up his rifle
and raised it in the air
he grabbed his crotch with his other hand
as we all stood and stared
and he said...

(chorus)
this is my rifle
this is my gun
one is for killing
the others for fun
so until this war is over
or until your time is done
this is your rifle
and this one is your gun

(verse)
thirty years have passed
since I stepped off that plane
the nightmares haven't ended
and neither has the pain
I've drank my share of liquor
and smoked my share of grass
but I can't unload the memories
or these few words from my past

(chorus No. 2)
this is my rifle
this is my gun
one is for killing
the others for fun
so until this war is over
or until your time is done
this is my rifle
and this one is my gun

verse
a dear friend of mine
he finally called it quits
they found him one cold morning
face down in a ditch
a bullet through his brain
his rifle at his side
and one old rusted dog tag
dated nineteen sixty nine

verse
when they turned his body over
they found his written note
it wasn't but a few lines
but the last he ever wrote
and when they laid him in his grave
on that cold December day
I took those words he'd written
and I began to sing...

(3rd chorus)
this is my rifle
this is my gun
one is for killing
the others for fun
so until this war is over
or until my time is done
this is my rifle
and this one is my gun

(end)
back in sixty nine
I didn't have a care
before they called my number
I chopped off all my hair

  • I'm about to throw my guitar by the window.....I'm speechless in front of such a beautiful tune. Paul

  • thank you Paul, hey please checkout my first uploaded version of this. It's a simple guitar and voice recording, but for some reasons it's done really good. I just like to hear your take on it. I appreciate you stopping by! I'll post as a VR to this one!! Mark

  • This is so real and emotional for me. I was carried out of Vietnam for failure to leave regarding orders to Drill Instructor School Parris Island on Jan. 10,1970. I was a member of Graves Registration at the time of transfer after having served in Vietnam from Aug 12, 1967 to Jan. 10, 1970. Not to go into detail but on May 30, 2010 I wrote a song titled 'US Marine'.

  • Thank you RedHeart for sharing this great comment with us. We sincerely appreciate your kind words and especially your faithful service. Mark, Rick and Alice

  • Always loved this Mark!

"may one day we truly find a better way to resolve our differences, imagine a world like that."

I believe we need to love and listen to our children first.

Not perfect, but a way better future is ours, as a gift, if...

if we show our our children faith, trust and moral sense.

For a better way, we need a spiritual language, we all understand!

Thank you Mark, Noy, Rick and Alice for this great share!

I pretty much love all you do!!

  • I couldn't agree with you more. You hit the nail right on the head here."Respect."

  • I was in "Nam" from 1967 through 1969. I just stumbled on this song about an hour ago. It destroyed me. I don't know why. With only one exception in 2002, nothing has bothered me about my experience there during the past 40 years until I heard this.

    Thanks for posting.

  • Mark ...I haven't walked in your shoes, but I can feel your pain in every word you sing. Yes, I too, long for the day when all the guns will be silenced! Let me dream of that day! With love from Canada, Evy

  • Hello Mark ***** sure the world needs to open their hearts .. a future of peace, love and brotherhood .. depends on our children and prevents this need to pass them. ***** Congratulations Mark Pino
