(Don't worry, no rap content.)

Adventures in the Viola, Part II. :-)

This is such a fun one to play... every time it comes out a little different because I get different ideas, and make different mistakes that I "get to" incorporate into the song.

Learned this song from Doc Watson, words a combination of his version and the Bray Brothers' (I much prefer Doc's version, but that's just me). Very happy to have been loaned this beautiful viola to play around with!

—Luke Abbott

p.s. - my new solo album is at http://lukeabbott.com/tmh, check it out. No funky chopping but a lot of other good songs.

  • I am inspired by seeing someone your age keeping the Bluegrass flame alive. The slight funk edge is cool and you have a very rich character laden voice. Your singing is actually preferable to me than listening to Bill Monroe or the Bray Brothers. But, Bill Monroe and the lesser known Bray Brothers are true American Treasures to be celebrated. You are too talented to let your insecurity show by taking cheap shots. I expect great things from you! - James Bray

  • @daniellemijomiles Thanks. :-) Again, didn't mean to put down anybody.

  • You ain't even a fly on the Late Great Nate Brays ass! Bite your tongue son. The Bray Brothers are Bluegrass. Doc Watson would grow eyeballs an hide your ass if he heard you say such a thing.

  • @daniellemijomiles Ha ha ha... obviously, I'm speaking about personal taste here, nothing against the Bray Brothers I just don't like their arrangement of this particular song as much. I updated the description to clarify. Thanks for taking the time to point this out. :-)

  • Well Done. I have just got my first violin today ! and i am going to learn to play this style of music and bluegrass i think. The clasical side does not appeal to me that much. can i have the music for this please? and i will post my progress over the next couple of months. Ben from notts U.K

  • @benwithaviolin Congratulations! It's a lot of fun. Do a google search for "The ToneWay Project" for our website with free beginner video lessons (unlike anything else available online). Playing by ear is a must for this, so looking for sheet music is a red herring. Be patient, being able to do stuff like this arrangement competently may take years. But having fun with the instrument can happen right away. Cheers :-) ~Luke

  • The Doc & Merle Watson version of this has been a firm favourite since I was a nipper. This is a fantastic version, keep up the good work.
