Gulaal, the project closest to Anurag Kashyaps heart, took shape in 2001, when he was listening to songs from Pyaasa andPaanch was struggling with censors. Inspired by a song from Pyaasa, Yeh duniya agar mil bhi jaaye to kya hai, the film is a dedication to Sahir Ludhianwi, the lyricist of the song and all other poets who had a vision of India.

Gulaal is set in Rajpur a fictional city of Rajasthan, where a member of the erstwhile royal family stakes claim to the land of Rajasthan and wants to go back to the days of royalty. He wants Rajputana back from the Government of India and challenges the very idea of democracy. His history backs him, his people too, but the power corrupts him...

Similar to a Shakespearean fable of desire, lost identities, love, greed, violence, murder, deceit, power and innocence, it is a film inspired by poetry; the forgotten male, macho world of power, corruption and greed, where women are just means to an end while nobody can be trusted. It's a film that brings back poetry to cinema, songs that inspire us, shake us; sometimes a thriller, a drama, but poignant, shocking and provocative. It's a film about the conflict created as a modern India tries to break the shackles of its past.

  • amazing movie.....show shah rukh 'castrated' khan this movie and show him what art is.....

  • WELL developed script with ultimate performance. This guy, Irfan Khan, Om Puri, Abhay Deol are making the best movies in Bollywood. But some audience is still Pussy Whipped, go after repetitive love stories with undeveloped scripts and songs shot in NY or London.

    > films are not always done for art.

Yes.Most politicians become ministers only to upift their standard of living. Most hiphop singers these days auto-tune their voices to sell more records. The world is not ideal.Who is John Galt?

    >i dont think that kay kay would do devdas as good as shahrukh :) KK would do devdas much more on the lines of SaratChandra's visit than Shahrukh ever can.I am willing to bet money that Shah Rukh hasnt actually read the book.

  • @samlearnstorock1 i liked the movie....im a fan of kay kay and anurag, but films are not always don for art! and in matters of box-office shahrukh is a hit. btw when you see him talking about working with irfan, you will get to know, that he never sees him self as a better actor...he is just a typical indian "hero" :P anyway its ok to compare two kinds of cinema (art & commercial)...but its not right to compare the actors....i dont think that kay kay would do devdas as good as shahrukh :)

  • Recently watched Gullal.

    It was a brilliant movie.

But still Rakht Charitra is much more awesome than this :D
