Eine Besonderheit der Viennale ist bereits seit längerer Zeit der jährlich neue Trailer des Festivals. Es handelt sich dabei um keinen Werbetrailer im eigentlichen Sinn, sondern um ein kleines, autonomes Stück Kino, das für sich und für das Festival zugleich steht.

Für James Bennings Arbeit ist dieser kleine Trailer ein wahrer Actionfilm. Benning filmt einen Arbeitsvorgang in einem Stahlwerk im Ruhrgebiet. Auf einer Art Förderband fährt ein glühendes Stück Stahl ins Bild und verschwindet. Um nach kurzer Zeit wieder aufzutauchen und als feuriges, leuchtendes Material erneut durch die Aufnahme zu ziehen. Schließlich fällt ein künstlicher Regen aufs glühende Metall und die entstehende Dampfwolke erfüllt das gesamte Bild und bringt es zugleich zum Verschwinden.

James Bennings kleiner Film, entstanden im Auftrag der Viennale, ist ein ebenso einfaches wie raffiniertes Stück Kino. „I took the steel rolling process that takes about 10 minutes, schreibt der Filmemacher, and condensed it down to one minute by cutting out portions and hiding the elipses in time with dissolves

Nach dem letztjährigen Trailer von Jean-Luc Godard, der ein kleines Wunder an Montagekunst war, ist Bennings Arbeit eine ebenso beeindruckende filmische Verdichtung von Zeit und Bewegung. Am Beispiel eines industriellen Arbeitsvorgangs. Und es wäre nicht James Benning, hätte er dafür nicht als Überschrift den Titel eines alten Hippiesongs von James Taylor gewählt: Fire and Rain.

Der Festival-Trailer Fire & Rain läuft ab 24. September österreichweit in über 100 ausgewählten Kinos und wird während der Viennale von 22. Oktober bis 4. November wiederholt im Programm des Festivals zu sehen sein.

Festival-Trailer Fire & Rain

The annual festival trailer has been one of the Viennales special features for quite some time now. It is not a commercial trailer as such, but rather a small, autonomous piece of cinema, standing on its own and for the festival alike.

In the case of James Bennings work this short trailer is a true action film. Benning shot the work process in a steelworks in the Ruhr area. On a kind of conveyor belt, a glowing piece of steel flits across the screen and disappears only to reappear again as a blazing, shining material. Finally, artificial rain falls onto the glowing metal, shrouding the whole image in a cloud of steam and making it disappear.

Created at the Viennales invitation, James Bennings short film is both a simple and subtle piece of cinema. I took the steel rolling process that takes about 10 minutes, as the filmmaker explains his approach, and condensed it down to one minute by cutting out portions and hiding the ellipses in time with dissolves.

Following last years Viennale trailer by Jean-Luc Godard, which turned out to be a small miracle of montage art, Bennings work is an equally fascinating cinematic poem about time and motion taking an industrial work process as an example. And it would not be James Benning, had he not chosen the title of an old hippie song by James Taylor as the title for his trailer: Fire and Rain.


The festival trailer Fire & Rain will be screened from September 24 in more than 100 selected Austrian cinemas and will be shown repeatedly as part of the Viennale program from October 22 to November 4.

This is pretty remarkable, actually. An everyday process in a factory that is seen out of context. Benning makes us spend time with images that we would otherwise ignore.
