Microsoft would get slapped with competition laws for much less than being the only hardware vendor.

Apple has the control over their hardware. They know their hardware, combined with UNIX technology this makes the system very stable.
WLAN Bluetooth camera dvd burner etc just work after the installation of OS X.
MAC compatible software just works, no compatibility problems.
It's like buying a game for your playstation, you know it will work and you won't have to mess around with problems.
