  • Aloha, I was the last roundhouse foreman at Bakersfield. I locked the doors on the Round house office at 7:00 am Oct. 4 1984. The saddest day of my 30 yrs. I had the pleasure of working on the last 5 Steamers in the valley as well as the disney steamer and narrow gauge # 1 in Oneyno, Cal.

awesome story Mr. foreman. Sounds like a dreamlife for any fan of railroading. I would have loved working for the railroad. Went up to San Berdoo a couple of times and tried to get on with ATSF...not in the cards. Very glad I got to spend some time in the Bakersfield area...eSPecially before SP died along with ATSF.

  • Thanks for this share! Growing up in Bakersfield I really miss the SP yard!!!

  • Yes, The thing on the nose of that SP Diesel was the Emergency Gyralight, In case of emergency, like the engineer lifting his foot off the dead man's brake or putting the loco into emergancy stop would light up that light.

  • Was that an AC44 or Dash9 44 at 4:48?

  • Wow, thanks for uploading this video!! Southern Paciific trains are one of my favorites next to Santa Fe, the mars stacked headlights are what gets my attention on these deisels.

  • I miss Southern Pacific. I remember seeing these old Geeps pulling sugar beet cars up and down the valley. The main SP line between Bakersfield and Fresno ran right next to Beadsley jr. high in Oildale and I'd be out there watching them go by! I'm reminded of many trips with my dad over to the Tehachapi Loop. What fun years chasing gritty SP and Santa Fe freights over the mountains!

  • I love the old High Nose & SW Units, there gone baby gone!

  • @Nathanrailfan Thanks.
