Just some advice in recognizing attempts from bad sites to get you to download malware disguised as virus protection.
I recommend only a few reputable virus protection programs
Avast,
AVG,
Norton,

I did a complete system scan with my already installed virus protection program of choice...and there were NO SUCH viruses on my system like the FAKE popup windows had been warning me of. Had I heeded those popup warning and downloaded their supposed software, then I probably would have gotten infected!!!

I had AVG for years but their latest version didn't mesh well with my systems but they are still reputable. Currently I use Norton with my Vistas and Avast with my XP systems and find them to be quite good.

  • This was from 2 years ago, so things have changed. I don't particularly like McCaffe, and deleted AVG years ago when they made it toooo robust, and didn't like Norton, years ago, but find the Norton product is just right now and effectively works without interfering while working in other programs.

  • NOOOO!!! NOOOOOOO!!!!!!

DO NOT HIT CONTROL/ALT/DELETE TO EXIT FROM A SCAM WEBSITE'S ACTIVE-X WARNING MESSAGES!!!

When you exit from the page that way, it automatically triggers the malware from the web page to start downloading onto your computer anyway.

You have to IMMEDIATELY disconnect your internet connection (ALT/F4) or turn off your computer to stop the rogue software from downloading itself.

  • That doesn't make sense. Alt f4 closes the browser program and ctrl alt delete gives you the same opportunity to close the program. What's the difference. and besides, it worked for me, no malware was downloaded.

  • Mama,

Another way to close a window, without going down the the "ctrl-alt-del" route and closing the whole application, is to hit "alt-F4". This will close down the active window in pretty much any application on windows. Thw Mac alternative is "Apple-W".

I've always found any shortcuts like this super useful as I came from an AS/400 background and it took me (actually still is taking me) years to get used to using a mouse!

    Keep up the good work.

  • Awesome! Thanks for the great Shortcuts!!!

  • Mama do you like apple computers ?

  • Yes, I do like Apple computers and I do like Windows Vista Ultimate, too! I cut my teeth on Apples when they were in OS8 11 years ago but over the years because of most of my students owning PC's because they were cheaper, I had to adapt to Windows because of them. I'm not a Mac snob, nor a PC defender. The both have their good and bad points. I just enjoy and appreciate the amazing technology of it ALL
