@Dannybroadsword1 you can't heat treat nails, the carbon content is too low (usually), if you want to heat treat metal you should research it first but you can buy square barstock from mcmaster.com (or wherever) W1 tool steel works great and is cheap as dirt. you can do a simple heat treat job with a welding torch (don't forget to temper after you harden or they will break). but heat treating shuriken is not necessary, mild steel works just fine.

you may be, may not be an expert, but i cant get the throw down. Ive tried it and changed my technique JUST as you did in the vid. any common mistakes you can recommend that i may be doing? the problem for me is getting it to fly straight

I would reccomend heating the tip, burying in sand to let cool, then file/sharpen, then heat again and quench in water. the slow cooling is called anealing, and makes the steel softer and easier to file. then the water tempers it and makes it hard so it holds an edge.
