Red blood cells are suspended in a 0.85% Saline solution. 1.75% NaCl solution is added slowly, and cells that are fixed in place slowly lose the water within their cell membranes. Note the appearance that the cell is withdrawing from the environment, or shrinking/becoming dehydrated when the hypertonic solution is added.
