Row 44, the company that is doing satellite-based wifi, has a Grumman Albatross that they use for wifi testing purposes. Southwest, one of their customers, asked me if I wanted to go for a ride on the airplane at NBTA in San Diego, and of course I did.

The Grumman was a search and rescue plane so it has a bubble on the nose where I was fortunate enough to lay for takeoff. What an incredible view.

  • Yep, I had to crawl underneath the pilots and belly up to the nose. No seatbelts or anything but a sleeping bag/blanket and a pillow.

  • As you are so forward of the props, there is still a huge amount of engine noise. You just to love the old Albatross and her big round engines, You could never sneek up on someone................

  • So cooool! So, you actually had to lay down in the nose bubble?
