The B-24 was the workhorse for the USAAF and was the most mass-produced US heavy bomber in WW II. It flew faster than a B-17 and with a heavier bomb load at a much greater range of operation. However, it was also fatiguing to fly with heavier, less reponsive controls and need for constant throttle manipulating. Axis fighters found it easier to shoot down, due to its vulnerable leaky fuel transfer system and constant avgas vapors in its bombay.

@RexReam give you another example, in the 1st years of WW2 people forget the handly page halifax

@RexReam I agree, the same with the hawker hurricane.when people talk about the ''battle of britain''9 out of ten they say spitfire.

@RexReam I agree the 17 got more glory but both aircraft did "the work". B-24 ETO missions tended to be at lower altitudes than the B-17 which obviously meant far greater danger from anti-aircraft guns. Also, although the 24's wing was aerodynamically very good, it was much narrower front to back than the 17 wing which meant the same size hole in their wings could mean a bigger problem for the B-24. The most famous B-24 mission was Ploesti (oil refineries), at very low level with heavy losses.

Great aircraft, she did the work while the B-17 got the glory.

Very Good video, an interesting viewing.
Huge planes these, i wonder if they were heavy on the controls.
