July 28, 1987 -- Crispin Glover's infamous "meltdown" on Letterman. It was largely considered a meltdown, but Glover maintains, loosely, that he was playing the role of a character named Rubin from a movie that would eventually see the darkness of theaters in 1991. No one bothered to let anyone — including Letterman — know in advance.

    He actually explained in a live show that he had more prepared: after the kick, he was to say, "But let's not just talk about the bad things. There are good things too. I'm in a new movie, River's Edge..." which would lead into a clip wherein he was playing a different type of weirdo, then he would continue, "And I have a girlfriend, and she's really pretty... and I just want to say that I'm very proud to be in Back to the Future." But he was also going for the element of surprise...
