Slow boat down the Mekong

By ferry from Thailand to Laos, then two days down the Mekong from Houay Xai to Luang Prabang, with an overnight stop in Pakbeng and a visit to the limestone caves of Pak Ou. Spectacular scenery, nice company, good food. The stop at the Hmong village on the first day was disturbing, not because they are so poor -- we'd seen poor villagers before -- but because contact with tourists had turned the children into trinket hawkers.

You chose a good time of the year to visit S.E. Asia as the weather's relatively cool and the rivers are still high. By March the dry season has hit and the Mekong's water level is much lower as well as the weather having become significantly warmer.
