this massena movie features the top four endangered landmarks from my viewpoints. they include:
--NUMBER FOUR: MASSENA'S CEMETERIES - THREE IN TERRIBLE CONDITION THAT CAN BE RESTORED AND LOOK LIKE EYESORES DUE TO NEGLECT.

--NUMBER THREE: THE OLD BUR OAK TREE IN DOWNTOWN MASSENA PLANTED AROUND 1850.

--NUMBER TWO: THE SMITH HOUSE THAT WAS JUST CONDEMNED BY THE VILLAGE. CONSTUCTED IN 1822 AND MASSENA'S LAST REMAINING HOTEL FROM THE MINERAL SPRINGS ERA. SITE OF THE FORMER MASSENA SPRINGS TAVERN.

--NUMBER ONE: THE FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH OF MASSENA. NOW UP FOR SALE AND IN GRAVE DANGER OF BEING BOUGHT BY A CHAIN STORE FRANCHISE. FIRST CHURCH SERVICES IN 1860. CORNERSTONE 1859.

--Massena's past leaders and the individuals with money that run the community love to demolish or never properly take care of historical sites. Not a single landmark in massena is on the national registar of historical places. WHAT A SHAME!! TIME TO WAKE UP MASSENA PEOPLE! nobody seems to care about our treasures that are now rapidly disappearing. In the last year, massena has seen a huge change in character. corporations that run chain stores are starting to overlaod the town. we have enough walmarts, walgreens, kinney drugs, rite aids, and dollar stores now! We also have alot of empty commercial spaces in massena that can be easily fixed up for new business. why destoy when you can renovate and preserve? why bullt a new building when you renovate an old one? it can cost just as much to demolished a structure as to renovating it!
Just travel to other nearby communities and you will see character in the homes and old buildings that massena no longer sees. only sixth structures are still existing that I know of before the year 1860.

--The massena first baptist church is in grave danger at this time. PLEASE IF ANYBODY OUT THERE WITH LOTS OF MONEY WHO CARES ABOUT PRESERVATION BUY THE CHURCH --EVEN IF YOU LIVE IN CALIFORNIA!! THEN AS A TAX RIGHT OFF DONATE IT BACK TO THE COMMUNITY FOR A NEW MUSEUM! WE NEED A BETTER AND BIGGER LOCATION FOR THE MASSENA MUSEUM.

  • @ericcecilie people would rather demolish a 150 year old landmark in downtown massena that was there when our pioneers started massena in its first 60 years and replace it with a quickie mart..

You should try to secure access to the baptist church and do a video documentary on it's history. It would be nice to see the inside. There should be some kind of archival record made before it is torn down. Maybe the cornerstone could be saved.

  • unfortunately most if not all of the family members of all these families are gone or moved away and don't know about any of their distant relatives and cannot take care of the stones. It is too bad.

  • good luck..i wish i could go on a trip for awhile away from massena to see people from here moved away! if i win the lotto or get rich i will fixup and buy all these landmarks to preserve them..well..the tree is different. time will only tell..john

  • i walk by that burr oak tree everynight and i never realized it was that old... i will say hello to the old oak tree next time lol thank you for this....i am leaving for the navy soon and will miss my small town of massena

  • You need to protect these places by declaring them National Historic Sites - then they get the protection of law and grant money. Tell your town officials to get on the ball! I live in the South now and entire downtown districts have been protected this way. Otherwise, your heritage will be lost to the pressures of economics. I grew up in NY and am still saddened by the loss of 18th C buildings removed for parking lots -- ugh. We need the old to tell us who we are today. Get cracking Massena!

  • well, when i was 16 massena was alot different..i guess that is what happens with age! your still very young. massena has always survived. but changes fast with different new people and new places. the old buildings go down and the cemeteries get neglected. our past gets forgotten too quickly. in time massena will hoepfully reviveitself. just have to have the right people who love for their hometown and the influence. thanks --john
