The great French soprano Emma Calvé (1858-1942), perhaps the most sensational singing-actress (and also the most famous Carmen) of her day, in "Belle nuit, ô nuit d'amour" (Barcarolle) from Jacques Offenbach's Les Contes d'Hoffmann, recorded in 1920 for Pathé, when the legendary diva was 62 years old.

A detailed appreciation of her life and career can be found in the following website from Marston Records:

Another well-written appreciation can be found in Edmund St Austell's "Great Opera Singers" blog:

  • If Calve was way past her prime in this recording, it's difficult to hear. She is an outstanding artist in all respects: beauty of voice, legato phrasing, style, diction, and interpretation. Thanks for sharing, Tim.

  • Glorious! TY Tim for posting.

  • Fantastic! Thanks for posting!

  • The instinctive use of legato! Beautiful.

  • TY Tim for posting.

  • Lovely! Smooth as silk, and spun as though it actually were silk. The voice is wonderful at this age; superb singing. Thanks for this, Tim.

  • 62 years and such exceptional performance! It's also interesting to hear this aria without the mezzo.

  • A God-given talent! Thank you, dear Tim for this wonderfully presented video!
