@ampicoab thank you. it was a lot of fun to push my brain to the max on this one. i will give a look at the start of the video to see if i can guess where you were when you were filming the outside terrian during climb. was wondering if you had any other great vids to post? perhaps your retirement flight? i think i speak for many when i say i truly enjoy your videos of the good old days of the 727!!!

IT'S SALT LAKE CITY!!!! I should have listened to myself the entire time. It's the only city that would have several als along a similar heading. plus i was able to find a high res cockpit photo on the web from a slc night approach.
it explains everything, the route, time frame and the distant lightning and the equipment. It should have been my first guess.

@dinonyc1206 Well Done! The video stops with the aircraft at about 10,000' South of the airport heading NW in the vectored approach to runway 16R. As the video stops, the approach lights for 34L are dimly visible. The black area ahead and to the left, is of course, Salt Lake.
My words of praise well have to suffice as your reward.
Care to try to identify anything else in the video?

time for another try, im keeping away from salt lake city because it doesn't seem to be rural enough near the airport. it looks like a populated area and it may be a costal city or very near a large area of water. i know the old charts would put you over west-central kansas before a slight southerly course change. i know the 727 did go into some cities in california but usually those that didnt really handle widebody traffic. im going to guess san diego...

@dinonyc1206 Not San Diego. The visual cues to identify the landing airport are scant. An approach lighting system can be seen (faintly) and distant lightning. It is a tough problem.

my mind wants to say things point toward salt lake city. the heading, route and equipment but it just looks to populated near the airport to be salt lake city. my other half of sleuthing wants to say vegas. its not denver im pretty sure of that. and the problem is the last known location is very near where routes would split off to either slc or vegas. im going to say vegas because it looks to developed around the airport to be slc. the video was made after 1995, correct?

@dinonyc1206 Good try, but not Las Vegas. Unsure about the exact date of video, but is probably the summer of 1997.
