Great fly, but the hackle you are using is WAY to long. It is much better looking and more effective with a shorter grizzly hackle.

I love that crackleback pattern that Barry is tying - I have fished that particular crackleback quite a bit with good crackleback results :-)

Ed Story created the Cracleback pattern in the 1950's. The original pattern calls for a cream turkey biot and not dubbing (his shop sells different colors now, but not dubbed), and they all use the furnace hackle. If I tie a griffiths gnat with a hackle different from grizzly, it's not a griffiths gnat.

Great video, as they all are. This pattern is a favorite of mine. I prefer to tie it with a bit of a yarn tail and on a curved shank hook. I really just like it with the tail. I thought I'd offer that little variation. Great video! Thanks!

Now that is one nice fly and a great tip for converting (or adding to...) the whip finisher to make it into a make-shift scissor!! I'll definitely be tying up some of these and head out for those bluegills!!! Thanks again!!

I think you've created a great fly, but it's not a crackleback.

Why do you feel this isn't a crackleback? I checked several sources, and what Barry is tying seems to be a crackleback. The only difference might be the use of a lighter hackle (furnace is the usual), but it's still a crackleback.
