Been several months since I performed for an audience, and a few since I've done a class so I hadn't prepared at all, but the beauty of improvisation is you can't make mistakes!

This is a dance impro I performed on 6th October 2006 as part of the program for Teacher Appreciation Night, organized by the Baha'i Community of Banyule. It's not hugely experimental, I kept it that way since the majority of the audience was unlikely to have been exposed to any form of contemporary/modern/neo dance at all and the focus was simply entertainment value for this occasion.

Music is by Ben Harper, "Morning Yearning".

  • I'd like to write a dance improv paper on your dance, if you don't mind. My class, a huge disappointment, I may add, was not about doing what you are doing. My teacher would say 'yes, no, why, because!' and we'd have to act it out. WTF! First where's the dance in that? and second, I'm not going out of my way to be made a fool of! I still want the credits - I've invested too much time. Next semester, I'm going back to yoga!

  • Go for it! :)

  • I have said I love the movement you create especialy with your torso, but it looks like your legs are very tense to me. Learning to relax them would enable you to move more fluidly when you traverse the floor.

Thank-you there are very few people I enjoy watching move.

  • Thanks for the lovely comments! I completely agree about the tension. It might have something to do with only stretching for 2 minutes, and not having danced (including practiced!) for several months before! Irresponsible, I know. As an organiser of the evening 2 minutes was all I could squeeze in for warm up!

  • There's actually a lot I don't like about this impro, but it was fun to do. I don't dance much at all these days, just he very rare and odd occasion, but will definitely keep your comments in mind.

  • Hey,

First of all congratulations on getting the guts to post. You did a beautiful job. A little feedback? You chose to be very literal and it dosent' read as well as if you just danced. Be more firm and intentional with your movements. Even improv can be clear! thanks

  • Thanks for your comment, I agree with you totally about the literal movement. It's a terrible habit I fall into when i'm too familiar with lyrics! I can't say I'm very fond of this performance, it was a bit wishy-washy/directionless, I can probably overcome that with more practice (of which i'm getting very little). Figured there's no harm in sharing! Anyway thanks again for the feedback :)

  • There is a huge amount to like. The only sad things are; that you don't seem to see it and don't dance much. Dance in everything you do and you'll never need to warm up:-) I hope you don't keep my comments in mind, but live in what ever you do, as you did during the dance. I hate dancing with people with things in mind (myself included) when practicing we need a greater mindfulness but less to live in the moment.
