Visit The War Years http://www.thewaryears.co.uk Welcome to this short film about the Messerschmitt Bf 109 (ME-109)

The German Luftwaffe operated many different aircraft during World War II, none were more prominent than the Messerschmitt Bf-109 fighter. A technological marvel when it first flew in 1935, the Bf-109 served on all fronts through the entire war.

With a top speed of 350 miles per hour at altitude, the Bf 109E-3 variant of the fighter was powered by the latest Daimler Benz 1200 horsepower engine. It incorporated a stronger canopy and more cockpit armour.

The Bf 109E-3 replaced wing machine guns found on earlier variants with much more destructive 20mm cannons. It's adversaries in the forthcoming Battle of Britain would possess less firepower.

The Battle of Britain, 1940
For three months, the Bf 109 engaged the Hurricanes and Spitfires of the RAF in a momentous struggle for air superiority over the Great Britain.
By the end of October 1940, the British had lost 1,149 airplanes, mostly fighters. The Luftwaffe lost almost 1,800 aircraft, one third of them Bf 109s.
By war's end over 34,000 Bf 109s had been built.

  • that the BF had more firepower in battle of britain is not correct. the spitfire had more!

  • @CB125B6 I'm sure the arguments will continue to rage but surely a 20mm cannon would outgun .303 machine guns?

  • Hi There: I don't know off the top of my head where you might buy a genuine me-109. I've seen a few me-108s at military shows recently, so they must be a little easier to come by.

  • @thewaryears1939

There are a few 109 wrecks for sale from brokers and salvage experts. It's a very expensive aircraft to restore if you want to go flying. Even the mostly intact Me109E example pulled from a lake took several years to find a buyer.

  • @FiveCentsPlease Thanks for the additional info, very interesting. I guess a groups of aircraft enthusiasts getting together might be a way to go to cover the costs of restoration, upkeep and flying - sort of joint ownership, like a race horse

  • Many thanks. I'm about to launch some new Me-109 designs on Zazzle and one that features Adolf Galland. Visit my website thewaryears.co.uk for more info.

  • @thewaryears1939 not in the when there are 12 303. against 2 20mm and 2 50.

The RAF on paper were outgunned, but when 12 machine guns fired at once it was equal to or greater than a blast of 20mm cannons, however the ME109 is my favourite aircraft of the battle of brittan, or alteast it compares with the hurricane MKII in my opnion.

  • bf 109 can rupture those spitfire panzies

Most are owned by private individuals or museums. Joint ownership can easily open the door for problems and infighting over many issues, but one rare early Bf109 example is under restoration by a group of private investors so we'll see how that works out over time.
