So here is a checklist for a loose or noisy fan belt.
If noisy make sure:
The belt is not too old/worn
There are no seized or hard to turn pulleys
You dont have any fluids contaminating the belt
The belt tention is correct.
The belt tentioner is fully functional.
If loose:
In case you have an old (slotted hole) tentioner, check off the list above and then tighten the belt accordingly
If you have a self tightening system (all new cars/trucks) check the tentioner operation or replace the belt.
Sidenote: You know that the "automatic" tentioner is damaged, when it is VERY hard to move, when it sticks or parts of it are loose.
All they are, is the pulley arm and the mounting bracket with a spring or even a hydraulic shock/cylinder in/on them.
Most of them cease to work, because the spring broke or dirt contaminated the mechansim, not allowing it to move properly or at all.
In case of a hydraulic/spring combination system, it may have lost the oil due to a seal leaking (which will just cause the system to be very erratic) or the spring broke.
To check your belt condition and then the bearings/pulleys should be the proper way to approach a noisy belt drive assembly!
Thanks for tuning in, leave a comment and rating please!
