The Sword & the Rose (1953)

A historically-inaccurate romantic tale of Charles Brandon and Princess Mary Tudor, the younger sister of King Henry VIII.

Notes from Wiki: In 1514, Princess Mary Tudor married the 52-year-old King Louis XII of France at the age of 18. Anne Bolyen was among the Maids of Honour who attended her. When King Louis XII died in early 1515, King Henry VIII sent Charles Brandon to bring her back to England but the couple married in secret in France. Although angered, King Henry VIII left the couple off with a heavy fine and an official marriage at Greenwich Palace. Years later, Mary was among those who opposed her brother's annulment with Catherine of Aragon. She died on 25 June 1533. Her eldest daughter, Frances Brandon, was the mother of Lady Jane Grey, the ill-fated Nine-Days Queen of England.

  • Why in the world did they make this movie, if it is not true, I am 100% sure that Anne B was never at her wedding, because she died before she ever got married.

  • @TheHattaru This movie is abt Henry VIII's younger sister - Mary - who married the French King Louis XII in 1514. Anne B was among her maids of honour. After the French King died, Mary married Charles Brandon in 1515. Years later, Mary was among those who opposed Henry's annulment of Catherine of Aragon. 24 days after Anne B was crowned Queen at at Westminster Abbey on 1 June 1533, Mary died.

  • @TheHattaru Historically, Henry VIII was very fond of his younger sister, Mary. He named his first daughter (Queen Mary I of England) after her. He knew that Mary was in love with Charles Brandon but he wanted a political marriage instead. When the couple married in secret, Henry VIII was angry but he let them off with a heavy fine.

Anne Bolyen would have been a young girl when Mary tudor and Brandon got married. maybe 12 to 14. she was not dead, she hadn't even married the king yet.

Henry was still married to his first wife Catherine at this point., and his daughter Mary, named after her aunt wasn't born. He was a young man when this movie was set, around 23 years old. I know it is confusing because he looks ancient.

this is his younger sister Mary, not his daughter.
