A visual poem of incomparable beauty, this masterpiece from director Nacer Khemir (Searchers of the Desert) begins with the story of a blind dervish named Bab'Aziz and his spirited granddaughter, Ishtar. Together they wander the desert in search of a great reunion of dervishes that takes place just once every thirty years. With faith as their only guide, the two journey for days through the expansive, barren landscape. To keep Ishtar entertained, Bab'Aziz relays the ancient tale of a prince who relinquished his realm in order to remain next to a small pool in the desert, staring into its depths while contemplating his soul. As the tale of the prince unfolds, the two encounter other travelers with stories of their own--including Osman, who longs for the beautiful woman he met at the bottom of a well, and Zaid, who searches for the ravishing young woman who fled from him after being seduced by his songs. Filled with breathtaking images and wonderful music, Nacir Khemir has created a fairytale-like story of longing and belonging, filmed in the enchanting and ever-shifting sandscapes of Tunisia and Iran.

  • This is more than a film. It is a cinematic teaching tale. It can function on the level of that sort of Sufi contemplation device in which direct experience through contemplation of a parable is more important than preaching and didacticism. It is designed with careful artistry so that it is omprehended by the faculty of consciousness called "the heart" rather then by the intellect. The tradition "Die before you die" has never been so well conveyed. -- Joe (Yousef Daoud) Martin

  • If you like this movie then you should start reading persian poetries from Rumi,Sa'adi, Ferdousi, Haafez, Shams, Attar.......and many tmany more to list. The bad thing is they lose most of their meanings when they get translated into another language. It would be nice to understand them in Farsi. I guess that's one reason that they used some Iranian actors and made it in Farsi (Persian) language.

  • can someone tell me the song that it's starting at 1:23? Thanks!

  • @MrCATesla I have not seen the movie yet, but the track u mentioned if it is the same in the movie, it is a reading of Quran Verse (Sureh)3 named Al e Imran- starting from Aye 33 (3:33) which is basically talking about the story of descendants of Abraham and birth of Mary and so on. I just know its beautifully mixed with percussions and other instrument, not so common tradition in persian/arabic urban/new age music.

  • Quisiera mas informacion sobre la banda sonora y la orquesta de esta hermosa musica, necesito saber sobre el tipo de instrumentos que usan.

  • where can I wach this movie online?

  • @MiaGilaani YES! There is one very good docu-film you would love...with scenes depicting the period and interjections from Sufi and other Muslim scholars, The Alchemy of Happiness is the story of Imam al-Ghazali, the most beloved Sufi theologian, philosopher and mystic...other than Rumi and Shams. The film can be found on Google Videos in its entirety. Go there and type in "The Alchemy of Happiness" or try this link - be sure to remove the spaces! ( h t t p : / / tinyurl . com / 4ppqfol )
