It's good to see Bharatnatyam dances explore other themes aside from the usual religious ones! Frankly I'm quite tired of the same routines and same stories told again and again.

This is NOT Bharatanatyam dance ! I shall explain why i Shobana is a hypocrite I have nothing personal against Shobana but she has learned to play the "game" in this country (say no more) I worked with her in 1985 with the newly formed Union Dance Company & then She was totally against anything except Bharatanatyam & stuck pure to it only . Corinne Bougaard formed Union to Fuse Dance styles (Contemporary) & after Shobana saw this was a success she stole the idea as Bharatnatyam had no audience

Continued :- She became the "Authority" with the Arts Council & (although i appreciate Shobana has done her dues as a Bharatnatyam Dancer in the UK) She is the right "image" for the Arts Council. Union dance tried to get her to "fuse" and she absolutely refused . Then within a couple of years she was being Lauded and Championed as an innovator in Indian/ Contemporay fusion ! History will be a lie as Union ( Corinne) & also Race Apart dance Company were the true pioneers & as is common ripped off

I DO feel your frustration. When I was learning myself my teacher would often say about how BN dancers have to do contemporary dance fusions as there was little audience for BN. My teacher was trained in Kalakshetra style in London, her guru was/is Balasundari who was a classmate of the Dhananjayans at Kalakshetra in the 50s & 60s.
