  • too fast. Sounds rushed.

    zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

  • A little fast, yes. But to say Isobel Campbell can't sing is like saying the pope isn't Catholic. Listen to any Belle & Sebastian original and then say she can't sing.

  • Arcade Fire does an amazing cover. Sooo much better than this!

  • Music not bad

    Voice and accent: terrible

  • @tremah05 Your English is fantastic. I really wouldn't have known. That said French people speaking English usually sound like they've had a stroke. You're alright. I found a Gainsbourg record at a garage sale once nearly 20 years ago (Rock Around the Bunker). I was amazed by how bad it was and how so many people seem to think he's as great as Elvis or something (or in your case, Jerry Lewis and Mickey Mouse....hahahaha how's that for a cliche?). But that's just me. I like plenty of crap.

  • @tremah05 Well, maybe so. The band really have improved over the last 12 years or so. I agree with you this wasn't the high water mark of their career. I really dig Isobell and there's so much animosity toward her here because she had the temerity to even dare cover a song by such a revered asshole. Talk about over-rated... anyway, I'm just funnin' around. What you or say doesn't matter anyway. As for my self-indulgence, well, I think that's the name of the game around here, anyway.

  • But friend if you don’t like them hot and with some tits, you can still fantasize about the cold, arty and annoying multi-instrumentist girl with no voice ! Ah, only kidding here. Aouch, I really put my English to the test on this one, but that was fun… have a nice night, pal !

  • He was a shy and complex man who sought an outlet to his ugliness by “taking advantage” of women, who usually would describe him as a “nice guy” or “a gentleman”… It’s hard to cast a stone at gainsbourg for taking advantage of France Gall’s innocence (or maybe this was the other way round ? HERE’s an idea !) The girl was fresh, beautiful (and hot).

  • It would be like writing about Hendrix to a certain extent and reduce him to a drug addict only interested in fucking wasted hippie whores and guitar sacrifices on stage. In other words, it’s all bull... “folklore” and publicity. Gainsbourg, like many other artists, created an image for the public of which he was manipulative at times, until he eventually fell victim to it and of his own manipulation (the self-destroying and pathetic “gainsbarre” of the 80s).

  • @jwhiteout ... into those bombastic, self-indulgent and ready-to-use formulas, I have to admit, friend, that you’re indeed 100% right about Gainsbourg and as true as a talking cliché can be.

Gainsbourg was well known for being a cynical, ugly, alcoholic asshole obsessed about women. You’re only indulging yourself with formulas here, and writing things that have been written over and over and over…

  • ...which is a not so well known record by Gainsbourg - and a must have.

As for the delicious France Gall (and others) being a “hot water bottle with tits” and “propped up doll being taken advantage of by some slimy studio hack” – while I can definitely acknowledge some kind of repressed puritanism (have you ever thought that women do eventually like to feel like “being used” by men at times ?... and what do you have against tits anyway ?)...

  • @jwhiteout Sorry bro' but I stand by my position: no voice and if u’re a bit into music u have to admit that this cover sounds bad regardless of your animosity towards “french culture” and your own subjectivity about this girl. The band barely keeps in tune, doesn’t play tight, and the trumpet is horrible.

As for Gainsbourg being a “legend”, well, you said it. I only care about music (and lyrics here, which are indeed brilliant) I would only recommend to listen to the "Melody Nelson" record..
