10 Years With Hooverphonic - Alex Callier Interview

Alex:
For example, a lot of fashion houses or guitar brands, when they have something to celebrate, they release a perfume or an old guitar type or something.
Geike has been the Hooverphonic singer for 10 years now, and this year we wanted to celebrate this.

The memories this song revives are a very small [???Wie weet wat hij hier zegt???] with a big flightcase and a neighbour who kept on ringing the bell at 2:00 am to ask if we could be a little quieter.

This original sound was a nightmare. I only had an old Atari 1040ST and a sampler with some old hard disk... The shows were already planned everywhere and I didn't know yet how to get this done. So I have had a lot of stress because of this. But when I finally got it working, I felt like, "This will actually work, and it's pretty good too!".

Lady:
A bit of a pity that there was this much fog and we couldn't see Geike, but the music was very good.

Man:
I think it was actually better that is was so hard to see Geike.

Interviewer:
What is in your opinion the drive behind Hooverphonic?

Man:
Geike! No further comment.

Alex:
In fact the demos were done by Esther. She also did all the showcases and on the day we had to sign our record contract at Sony Music she said: "I don't think I can do this...". That caused a lot of panic, we had a deal but no singer. So we searched and finally got Lies. And after being on the road for like a year she also quitted. After her we worked with Kyoko Baertsoen for a short time, but we couldn't really connect with each other.
Three months after that we called Geike asking: "It is almost schoolbreak, in September you'll be 18 years old, do you want to be our singer?". She immediately said: "Yes, that's OK!".

After those three singers quitting so fast I would never believe she would be staying for 10 years, but I thought: "She's a little crazy, Belgian, stubborn, she might handle it for some time".

The look is very authentic for Geike. She doesn't really change in appearance .
My girlfriend strictly prohibited me to fall back to that haircut, and wear these glasses again as I did in the "prettig gestoord" phase.

The last tour was like the ending of those 10 years.
We wanted to go more back to our roots, back to the more independend structure. It's unbelievable people panic because we don't have a record deal anymore. No, it's cool, we are not dependend anymore and still we are having fun, making new songs and releasing them.

The new single and new album will be released next summer. We are also preparing for a theatre performance. Have a tour through europe. We have enough to do...
