Today we hike through prime leaf colors from the Big East Fork Parking Area, up the Old Butt Knob Trail (Chestnut Ridge, Old Butt Knob, Dog Loser Knob) to Shining Rock. We view the misty summit of Shining Rock, and return home along the Shining Creek Trail. As Usual, Stella comes along... Total Hike Time 4 hours, 46 minutes including a lunch break.

  • JDplus3, I just found this video. Awesome! I hiked this very route 1 week ago, having hiked in Shining Rock a lot but never on these trails. It was very tough but very rewarding. I wish I had stumbled across your video first!

    Happy trails man!

  • Thank you! It is my personal playground!

  • Great video's.These areas are part of my life.I like Shining Rock Wilderness any time of year.

  • I agree. It is such a rare place where you can get out and in a short time be totally alone. It is also a great place to get lost and die, so I hope someone might learn something from the videos too...

  • Enjoy your videos. You made this hike look a lot easier than it felt to me.

  • Love your videos! Well done!

  • Love your entire series of videos, which were the inspiration for our own "Poorly Prepared Dayhiker" videos (I linked to my favorite as a video response). Of course, you're actually providing useful information and commentary, unlike our videos. Well done!

  • you people crack me up about easy to get lost in there. its quite simple. i was actually there today hunting.

  • I am going up to Cold Mountain in a couple weeks to watch the peak of the Leonids meteor shower. My friend and I found an article about it in Backpacker magazine. Where can I order the map that you traced on this video? We are starting at the Big East Fork trailhead, to take the Chestnut Ridge Trail to the Art Loeb trail to Cold Mountain.

  • I went on a North Carolina Outward Bound trip this summer for three weeks and we hiked all these trails. They were very difficult yet so rewarding and amazing. I Miss it like crazy, Id give anything to hike those trails again. Thanks so much for putting this up, it brings back many awesome memories!!
