Jim Kirk Sober [full video]

Pairing: No official, but if you turn your head slightly to the left you'll definitely see some Kirk/McCoy. *smile* And then if you turn your head a little to the right you'll see some Kirk/Pike?????? 0.O)

Vidders notes: YAY! This monster is done!! You wouldn't believe the issues I had with Sony Vegas while trying to finish this one. But anyway. I'm glad and I hold it close to me. So the point?

What we have hear is a character study of the New Captain Kirk as I understand him from the movie and have come to love him through Fan Fiction. His dysfunction, his brilliance, his hurts and his wants. In my mind Space and Jim have this black widow relationship. Both his mother and his father get sucked into space and disappear (in different ways). He spends his childhood and adolescence avoiding it and embittered. Not "sober" in both a literal and figurative sense.

But that life style was killing him as much as space ever could. I find it interesting that when Pike gives his "pick up your life" speech it's not the typical "do better for you" speech. Maybe because he's a captain and (in my opinion) very similar to Jim, but Pike is all like, "Do you wanna be a master, of poke- I mean space *cough* do you have the skills to be number one!" Essentially he tells Jim to stop being a coward and go back and kick space's ass. Think about it. He could have encouraged Jim to pick up his life in any number of ways...just a thought.

So far, I don't think Jim has achieved a genuinely "healthy" mental state (at least by any professional assessment, but show me someone who has). He's not wasting his life in bars and brawls anymore, but he and lady black are doing the deadly tango and unlike Pike I don't think Jim could let that go if his life depended on it. And it does. Jim is very codependent in that regard.

I think he simply found a new addiction in space. That yeah, would probably kill him too if not for the tempering presences in his life. Like a crew that loves him, a best friend like McCoy who drags him back from the edge, and a father type figure in Pike. :) I love layered characters. I can't wait to see how Jim further develops in the 2nd movie.
