Harvard Professor's Op-Ed Sparks Free Speech Debat

For 10 years, Subramanian Swamy taught an economics course at Harvard University's summer school. Swamy earned his own Ph.D. in economics from Harvard, and he went on to become a prominent politician in India, leading -- as he still does -- the country's Janata Party.

And for a decade, his political views didn't seem to matter to anyone at Harvard. Until this summer, when Swamy wrote a fiery op-ed in the Daily News & Analysis of India calling for a particularly Hindu solution to wiping out Islamic terrorism. Annex parts of Bangladesh, he wrote. Prohibit conversion from Hinduism to any other religion. Mandate learning Sanskrit.

The op-ed didn't sit well with several students who called for his ouster. Harvard's president, Drew Faust, issued a statement supporting Swamy's right to free speech, and the matter seemed settled. Until last month, when a group of faculty effectively fired Swamy, without notifying him, by voting to remove his courses from the summer school catalog.

The move has ignited an even larger controversy at Harvard -- one that pits extreme expression against academic freedom. Moreover, it has raised the question: Just how broad a universe of ideas should be welcomed at a university?

Harvad is a educational business instution, they need money from muslims, lefist for existence, when it come to free speech against money, money is money in effect, free speech will gain nothing for the harvad in particular, so this free speech theory will vanish over to money as seen at present actions, with great harvard explanation by professors looking at their existence only.

Harvard is not end of education or standards.So it does not matter.Dr.Swamy - there are millions of proud Indians supporting you on your views.Be it Harward or Oxford basically the administration have racial discrimination against Indians and Hindus.

None of the commentators have replied to the points suggested by Swami Subrananian on merits. What is the use of such interviews where they speak in general, irrelevant loose philosophical terms.

Is it a new thing to accept the ancestry? Is it new to admire ancestors? What is the tradition of Indonesia and other South Eastern nations where they are proud of their ancestors who had Hindu Culture. Even the Egypt which a Muslim country off course admires of their ancestors who were non-Muslims.

@mayaghose you are wrong.  muslims are 20% of the population of india. muslims have killed 80 million hindus over 1400 years of jihad and destroyed tens of thousands of hindu temples. many hindus were forcibly converted to islam, became slaves, were raped, etc. so that 95% of muslims in india have hindu ancestry.
