Have a Plano miller, boring machine and a jig boring machine -- all 3 machine in the same place where your an eye-sore of an old planing is located in your shop floor, occupying so much for floor space, doing irritatingly slow planing operation with its single point cutting. Ram head adds Plano milling, drilling and boring capabilities to your existing planing machine. After Plano milling of the top surface, you can do deep hole drilling and boring in the same set up, without removing the job. Combination of ram type milling head and a two axes DRO virtually adds jig boring capabilities to your planing machine. A small investment on a ram type milling head will bring home a whole lot of amazing and multiple linear machining capabilities to your planing machine without demanding additional space and man power!
Cylindrical quills of the conventional milling heads inherently need more sliding clearance in their respective guiding bores in the spindle housings. Larger clearance between the quill and the bore reduces the rigidity of the milling head. As the cutting zone gets shifted away from the milling head, spindle accuracy keeps deteriorating. Large bearing supports for long spindle make the spindle housing huge, which prevented them from reaching the interiors of jobs, having narrow access passage. Slide based feed system too is not able to overcome similar limitations. Innovative, ram type milling heads could overcome these limitations of conventional milling heads.
The square, box type ram is sleek in construction and can access the deep interiors of work pieces through their narrow access passages. The box type ram of the milling head is located in a rigid housing. The square design of the ram minimizes the play between the male and female sliding surfaces. Unique, 4 numbers of taper jibs eliminate excess clearance between the sliding surfaces and leave just minimum sliding clearance that is required. When machining is done at long-distance away from the spindle, the accuracy and material removal capabilities of the milling head remain unaffected. In modern days CNC Plano millers, vertical axis movement is no more through the cross rail up and down movement along the vertical column, which is inherently inaccuracy-prone. The vertical traverse is provided by the self-powered, sleek ram of the milling head.
Shenoy Engg Pvt Ltd, a Bangalore based SPM manufacturers, has made available the ram type milling heads at an affordable price even for the conventional planing machines, which are to be converted into Plano millers. The ram stroke or vertical traverse is 300 mm or more, if required. 145 mm x 145 mm box type ram is made of high grade CI, stress-relieved and hand-scraped for a very level of blue matching. Internal row of multiple bearings provides rigid support to the long spindle of the ram type milling head. The ram feed is through a combination of common VFD controlled motor, gear box, angular contact bearing supported ball lead screw and box nut. Adjustable feed end setting is through dog operated limit switches and the scale with graduation.
