Dr. Julio Frenk, Dean of Harvard School of Public Health, summarizes the lessons from the first wave of H1N1 pandemic virus. On the positive side, Dr. Frenk notes most patients only suffer a moderate form of H1N1.

When pandemic H1N1 "swine flu" broke out this spring, Frenk was in the thick of discussions by the Mexican government, the World Health Organization and governments and organizations worldwide in his roles as the current dean at Harvard School of Public Health and the former minister of health in Mexico.

In Mexico, he also oversaw the design and implementation of a successful reform to achieve universal health insurance by covering more than 50 million uninsured persons. The reform also established a new public health agency and strengthened epidemiological surveillance with the aim of protecting the population against health threats.

These experiences enable Frenk to provide a unique perspective on the lessons he believes the United States can learn from other countries about health reform, universal health care and the ever-present threat pandemics pose to health and economies. - Commonwealth Club of California

Dr. Frenk is an eminent authority on global health who served as the Minister of Health of Mexico from 2000 to 2006. He pursued an ambitious agenda to reform the nations health system, with an emphasis on redressing social inequality.

He is perhaps best known for his work in introducing a program of comprehensive national health insurance, known as Seguro Popular, which expanded access to health care for tens of millions of previously uninsured Mexicans. He is currently Dean of the Harvard University School of Public Health.

Enough histrionics. The nasal mist has been used in seasonal flu without issue. In clinical studies, transmission of vaccine viruses to close contacts has occurred only rarely. The current estimated risk of getting infected with vaccine virus after close contact with a person vaccinated with the nasal-spray flu vaccine is low (0.6%-2.4%). Because the viruses are weakened, infection is unlikely to result in influenza illness symptoms since the vaccine viruses have not been shown to mutate.

The vaccine does not contain H5N1. The injection contains a dead H1N1 virus. The nasal spray contains a modified (weakened) live version. The healthiest segment of society are hit the hardest due to their strong immune systems, This is exactly what happened during the great influenza pandemic which is now recognized to be a form of Avian Flu. The concern with H1N1 has been that, it will re surge in a second wave like most flues do in a more lethal strain. As easy as it seems to spread from one person to another, a new pandemic could be at hand without a vaccine. We almost eradicated some diseases, but people refused vaccines.

H1N1 is not plain old swine flu, it is swine flu that has picked up some genetic material from avian flu. Much like the great influenza out brake that killed millions world wide, H1N1 isn't usually what directly kills you. It leaves your lungs lining damaged, leaving you vulnerable to bacterial infections that kill you. The damage to the lungs is caused by an over response from the immune system, the old & young who's immune systems are worn out & less developed don't react as aggressively
