Songs are divided into 4 levels of power, starting from Lv1 and charges to Lv4:

Level 1 = Go! / Protect Everybody!
Level 2 = This is only the beginning.
Level 3 = I need more Power!
Level 4 = This is my masterpiece!

All Offensive Songs are Lv4 when used.
All Defensive songs will be charged.

So... Every costume has a diffrent song? Or are the costumes just for looks?

Just for looks. Each Costumes has its own individual status bonus (like faster singing % rate or better Harmonics or more MP, etc).

So you have a choice of either picking a costume for looks or for better gameplay efficiency.

Just for looks I would say. Because you craft songs, you don't get songs with the costumes.
