The words to this song are based on a Bible verse (Jeremiah 12:9). The earliest recording of this song was made by Roy Acuff in 1936.

The tune is very popular and has also been used for "I'm Thinking Tonight Of My Blue Eyes" and "It Wasn't God Who Made Honky-Tonk Angels".
