The second of 2 basic katas practised by the Academy of Traditional Fighting Arts. Where Fukyugata ichi is a cross between the original Shoshin Nagamine version and Pinan/Heian shodan, the Muidokan Fukyugata ni not at all related to the version created by Chojun Miyagi (subsequently renamed Gekisai dai ichi). Instead it is expands on the Muidokan Fukyugata ichi, but concentrates on basic evasion (tenshin) and back stepping taisabaki/ashisabaki. (See http://dandjurdjevic.blogspot.com and http://www.traditionalfightingarts.com/karate_fukyugata.htm).

  • Nice kata and great execution. what is its lineage? I practice a kata called Fukyugata ni as well, but it looks almost exactly like gekisai dai ichi (same composer).. not like this one.

  • Thank you. If you have a look under "more info" you'll see some links - look at the second one which explains exactly the history behind the Fukyugata forms of Nagamine and Miyagi and the development of this kata.

  • Thanks. I'm sorry I didn't read it sooner before asking. I like your concept of focusing on specific techniques, in this case, evasion.
