What do you do when your hot water heater gives up the ghost? Well, you build a passive solar water heater, natch. Kasin Hunter, a do-it-yourselfer in sunny Tucson, Arizona, is doing just that. Here's Part One on how to build a Bread Box Solar Water Heater from a recycled refrigerator and a water heater that was heading towards the dump. The Tucson group of Freecycle alerted Kasin to the heater that needed a new home. Thanks, Freecycle!

  • nice idea it might have been a little easyer if you started with a chest type of freezer

  • @iwantosavemoney My neighbor was tossing this fridge to the curb, so I grabbed it. :) Beggers can't be choosers. But I agree with you. I would have opted for less work if the opportunity would have presented itself. If it had been a chest freezer, it would have to be large enough to fit the 29 gal. water heater tank internally.

I did grab a chest freezer from Freecycle and plan on reworking it into a sun oven. So many projects. So little time.

  • I love this. We waste to much here America . we all need to be more resourceful.

    Great Job KasinH.

  • Wow, plumberx. It's a treat to see you post on one of my vids. Your videos on installing water heaters is one of the main reasons I have the bravado to try this project. Your vids are step-by-step, clear, and encouraging. I've downloaded everyone of them.

Thanks so much for posting. If you see anything that can help or improve along the way, I invite you to post it - please. :) :)

  • Thanks goathollow for watching. I checked out your YouTube page. I like the way you are survival minded. Let's keep in touch off and on.
