The Costa Concordia Disaster:
The industry's safety issues came under global scrutiny on Jan. 13, 2012, when the cruise ship Costa Concordia, carrying more than 4,200 passengers on a weeklong Mediterranean cruise, slammed into a rock and capsized near the island of Giglio, off the Italian coast. At least 11 people were killed and, according to Italy's coast guard, 22 remained missing.
During the chaotic evacuation, questions were raised about the lack of preparedness of the crew and passengers and whether the ship had steered dangerously off course. Cruise passengers are supposed to attend a safety briefing within 24 hours of boarding, but survivors said no drills ever took place.
New evidence suggested that the crew, at least initially, sought to assure passengers that they had nothing to fear, even after the vessel began taking on water. Amateur video published on the Italian Rainews24 Web site showed an unidentified female crew member urging passengers to stay calm. And, according to a transcript of communications between the ship and the Italian Coast Guard, other crew members were insisting that the only problem was an electrical failure.
Worries also grew that the ship's half-million gallons of fuel could leak into a marine wildlife sanctuary.
