Remember your old band director (probably a non-brass player ) who use to insist if you weren't hitting high notes with a good Bach 1 1/2 C or Bach 3C, you were probably cheating with a shallow cup mouthpiece?
Don't ya just hate people like that because you ended up frustrated and feeling bad about yourself.
But, you did hear professional trumpet players busting out paint peelin' Double C's, right?....... and maybe thought they were playing dutifully on a Bach 1 1/2 C, but couldn't be sure:
NO, THEY WERE NOT PLAYING ON BACH mouthpieces!!!!
But the top trumpet players noted for extreme upper register trumpet playing could play high on a Bach mp if they wanted, but why would they?

Playing charts like Hey There or playing Lead Trumpet on Rob Mcconell's TO while using a bach 1 1/2 C mp would make life much harder than it needs to be especially if you do it for a living on a regular basis!

Practice alot, practice the right stuff in the right way and you won't be insecure to tell people what mp you play lead trumpet on.
( AS LONG AS YOU ARE GETTING GOOD TONE, INTONATION, ACCURACY, ETC...)

Trivia Pursuit: Bill Chase actually once was the lead player in Maynard Ferguson's Band. However, after more than once of almost passing out and GASSING out, Maynard gave Bill a two week notice to fix the problem which Maynard thought was Bill's MP.
I can't say for certain, but if I had to guess, Bill was probably trying to use a larger mp or god forbid a Bach something C mp because he didn't want to "cheat".
The end of the story was that Bill did not change mp's in time and was let go by Maynard.
Some time later, Bill did find the right mp, probably a more shallow mp ( can anyone say Shilke 6a4a?) and the rest is history!

  • @yourbrassinstructor I've been using a Bach 5b for 3 years now do you have any suggestions on what I should move on to next

  • @trumpet9619 Well, that all depends on what you want to accomplish, right? click on my trumpetsizzle website link and we can take it from there.

  • TOTAL B.S.!!!!

This is fake. It appears that he edited this by speeding up the pitch for the highnotes.

You can do this on wavepad. There is no way in hell he can play a double high C on a Bach 1 1/2....I know because that is MY mouthpiece and I have played on it for years and years.

If you can get up to a high C or a high D or Eb, be happy because you are doing good.

This guy really can't play this high without some tricks

  • @TRUMPETSKEPTIC I could remove your negative comment, but I will leave it up for all to see. This video is the real deal and so are the highnotes.

From playing a joint jazz concert with the Airmen of Note to being asked to a Live Audition for Maynard Ferguson and more.......I practice what I preach. It is not just theory!

  • Honestly if you put in the work with lip slurs etc...there are no limits with using a reg mouthpiece you just have to put in a lot of work.

  • I agree with the overall message of the video: use the right tools for the job.

  • @MasonCaster No. Just cause a piece may be bigger, or deeper, etc, doesn't mean it will give you a "better" tone. Technically, Allen Vizzutti has great tone, but it's slightly bright because it's a shallow piece. Wynton has great tone, but very dark due to a huge piece. Find a inside diameter that allows you to play to your ability. Then adjust the depth for the color of the sound (bright or dark). It's all how you blow and how your embouchure is. The piece just adds color really. Have fun!

  • @GetOwned426 Get this cheap trumpet book from Amazon : 'The Breeze Easy Method Book 2'. It has great slurring exercises that build you up slowly up to a high G (the G above the staff). You can then take those exercises and raise up the notes until you get where you want to be.

  • Im playing on an 11 4b and a 7c off and on. Im looking to buy a 5c would this get me better tone?

  • @TRUMPETSKEPTIC Sorry Skeptic, but we had a "Super C" club back in music school and we ALL played dbl C on "big" mouthpieces. Mine had a drilled out bore for more air. This guy is spot on. I made my life a whole lot tougher than it had to be. I like my warburton mthpcs now.

BTW, this guy is spot on. I've played lead classically (thnk brandenburg and mangnificat). Wish I would have had some warburtons/ or whatever he has back in college.

  • can someone help me? i have a hard time getting high notes and slurring from a note to another note a few bars higher can someone help?

  • In high school i could squeak out a double C with a 1 1/2c... it's possible, I'm sure.

  • @TRUMPETSKEPTIC or maybe he has more skill than you..

  • @TRUMPETSKEPTIC tis is possible bach 1 1/2 is my favorite mouthpiece it can do wonders......
