Yusuf Islam (born Steven Demetre Georgiou; 21 July 1948), commonly known by his former stage name Cat Stevens, is a British musician. He is a singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, educator, philanthropist, and prominent convert to Islam.

His early 1970s record albums Tea for the Tillerman and Teaser and the Firecat were both certified as Triple Platinum by the RIAA in the United States; his 1972 album Catch Bull at Four sold half a million copies in the first two weeks of release alone and was Billboard's number-one LP for three consecutive weeks. He has also earned two ASCAP songwriting awards in consecutive years for "The First Cut Is the Deepest," which has been a hit single for four different artists.

Stevens converted to Islam at the height of his fame, in December 1977,[5] and adopted his Muslim name, Yusuf Islam, the following year. In 1979, he auctioned all his guitars away for charity[6] and left his music career to devote himself to educational and philanthropic causes in the Muslim community. He has been given several awards for his work in promoting peace in the world, including 2003's World Award, the 2004 Man for Peace Award, and the 2007 Mediterranean Prize for Peace. In 2006, he returned to pop music with his first album of new pop songs in 28 years, entitled An Other Cup. He now goes professionally by the single name Yusuf. His newest album, Roadsinger, was released on 5 May 2009.

  • @The33unicorns I think he's wonderful and full of passion! Remember, he is not a Cat in his early 20's, he is a man of about 66 years old! So remember how so many musicians have overdosed or died very early from bad living, but Cat/Yusuf is as sound and just as beautiful a soul as ever! ♥

  • The only thing that bothers me about his spiritual choices is that it took him out of the music business for too many years. But then again, I am selfish! Thank God he is healthy and well and back out there. He is sheer talent and brilliance. Can we just forget about religion when we listen to him?

  • A rather ironic song from a fascist cunt who openly called for the murder of another artist.

Used to love Cat Stevens and yes musically he still has the gift, but for that will never make up for his betrayal of human values and his association with the cult of murder and death while sing about peace and love. A fascist , a cunt and above all a hypocrite

  • The Animals got it all over this version. Eric ftw

  • WOW!!!!!!!!!!!

    JUST ENJOY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • This is a terrific version of this beautiful song. I love seeing him play live. It is sad how many artist can't back up their recordings with equally moving live shows. He is a gift to those who truly love music.

  • beautiful you stil sing from the hart

  • Oh if we could all say that....I'm just a soul who's intentions are good....please don't let me be misunderstood. We are only human.

  • @misslanvin No. We can't forget about religion. Sorry, this is a man who called for the death of Salman Rushdie - expressed his regret that Rushdie was only being burned in effigy. He still manages to sing "Peace Train" and asks not to be "misunderstood". I'll stop misunderstanding him the day he apologises. Until then he's a hypocrite.

  • @SeventhHeaven5655 63 years old. : )
