It happened to grunge too. I hated grunge, but it innovated to begin with. Then the record companies got a hold of it, applied their formula, and produced shit like Creed. Then Nickelback.

@Bastiat90 Indeed! Besides: by the time grunge came along, hair metal bands had already worn themselves down. The competition about whose vocals went higher, whose guitar solo was faster, whose hair was bigger and whose make up flashier, things had started to get ridiculous, even by hair metal standards. Honestly, where could they have gone from where they were? Me, I prefer hair metal over grunge a million times, but I'm not that amazed that audiences started to look for sth more down to earth.

The record companies ruined hairbands by applying their formula. Photogenic frontman, a ballad and a guitar solo that invariably featured tapping. Dee Snider theory of the W's. Winger, Warrant, Whitesnake, Great White, White Lion etc. It just became far too commercial and poppy. Something like Nirvana was bound to happen, especially when songs like Save the Weak by Britny Fox and When the Children Cry by White Lion were being written. Sad but true

Sorry, IMO Nirvana were talented but just too self indulgent and depressing. A good band when you're a angsty teenager but when you just wanna have a good time, you NEED hair metal, music from bands like Van Halen and Cinderella are the BEST <3
