Poet, retired educator and civil rights activist LaVerne Byrd Smith, of Richmond, VA, wrote this poem in 1968, the year Martin Luther King Jr. died. She resurrected it recently in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day as well as the Jan. 20 inauguration of the country's first black president, Barack Obama.

Also featured are civil rights icons of Virginia's capital city, Richmond: the Arthur Ashe statue on Monument Avenue; the Civil Rights Memorial on the grounds of the State Capitol; and the Reconciliation Statue in Shockoe Bottom.
