Herbert Nitsch is the current freediving world record champion and "the deepest man on earth". This prestigious title was given to him, when he set the current world record for freediving at an incredible depth of 214 meters in 2007 ("No limits" discipline). So far Herbert has set 31 world records in all 8 of the 8 recognized disciplines and can hold his breath for more than 9 minutes - unrivalled achievements in the freediving history.
Unlike other elite freediverĀ“s Herbert is self-taught. He is a pioneer in every way. The highest security level, detailed planning and analyzing always is ahead of every dive. As he is working as a part time pilot for Austrian Airlines Group, check-lists and worst case scenarios are on his daily schedule. This highly security related and risk avoiding attitude helps him and to achieve his ambitious goals within freediving. Furthermore he is keen about every technical detail of his equipment.Together with his international technical team he designs and produces highly innovative gear with aerodynamic shapes and lighter materials. He also developed his own freediving techniques over the years, a methodology that largely differs from the common styles. And Herbert is the first freediving athlete, who cooperates with a scientific advisory board and medical doctors. Almost any scientific research has been done so far on the physiological effects of freediving, especially as deep as Herbert is diving.
Today HerbertĀ“s motives are about the unknown, about crossing physiological borders, achieving goals that seem beyond the limits, overcoming mental blockings or exploring what your body is made for. In 2011 Herbert aims to become the first breath-hold athlete to break the 300-meter/1000 foot mark. This is far deeper, than anyone has gone so far ...

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TED has created a program called TEDx. TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. Our event is called TEDxVienna, where x = independently organized TED event. At our TEDxVienna event, TEDTalks video and live speakers will combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events, including ours, are self-organized.
