That's what bands do. They evolve and change over time. They also do things for publicity. Mainstream music is not inherently shallow and materialistic. What's popular right now might be shallow and materialistic, but that doesn't mean that any music that's popular is automatically shallow simply because it is popular. I personally loved their appearance on the Simpsons. The tracks they wrote were beautiful and captured the spirit of Iceland.

I love Sigur Rós but I'm disappointed with their latest songs. Perhaps I'm jumping to conclusions but what with their changed style and recent appearance on The Simpsons (which contradicts their past values) I fear we may lose the Ekki Múkk Sigur Rós to the materialistic and shallow mainstream of music. I really hope I'm wrong. Their old music speaks to my soul and sends tingles through my body. Their new songs did nothing of the sort. I hope they stay true to themselves as they gain popularity.
