Springfieldarsenal.com fires the Mystery Weapon, after of course thoroughly examining it to ensure it is completely sound and safe to fire. The weapon is believed to be a French naval swivel howitzer, cast in 1738 by a yet-to-be-identified foundry. The weapon is fired with 6-pound zinc balls using a maximum charge of 3 oz. of FG black powder. Two hits are obtained on targets 100 yards away. Watch closely especially in slowmo segments, and you can clearly see the ball flying to the target. A howitzer is a relatively low-velocity weapon, normally used to lob explosive shells at an enemy, or to fire canister rounds at enemy infantry or cavalry.
